THE PROBLEM

The problems faced by persons with disabilities in Amethi, as in many regions, include:

• Lack of Accessibility: Many public spaces, buildings, and transportation systems are not designed to accommodate individuals with disabilities, leading to social exclusion.
• Despite a growing awareness, challenges related to hygiene and accessibility remain widespread. The survey showed that 59% of girls reported missing school, college, or work during their periods. Limited access to clean and private toilets further compounds the issue — only 49.5% of respondents said they had access to a hygienic and private toilet.
• Limited Availability of Assistive Devices: Access to essential assistive devices, such as wheelchairs, hearing aids, and prosthetics, is often inadequate, leaving many without the tools they need to enhance their daily lives.
• Stigma and Discrimination: Societal attitudes may perpetuate stigma, resulting in discrimination and marginalization of persons with disabilities, hindering their participation in various aspects of community life.
• Lack of Educational Opportunities: Educational institutions may not be fully equipped to support students with disabilities, leading to fewer opportunities for learning and personal development.
